Height choice...
Your
wind generator must have a clear shot at the wind to perform well. Turbulence which is highest close to
the ground, reduces energy production, and wear your Winglette wind generator out. Fortunately, turbulence diminishes as wind
speed increases with height, above ground level.
The
energy available in wind, is a cubed function of wind velocity.
Increasing wind velocity increases
the power out put of the wind system to the third
power. Because of this cubed function, wind velocity is the
one variable that has the greatest impact on the power equation.
From
this simple observation, one can conclude the following:
- Turbulence
and ground drag reduces wind velocity.
- Turbulence
and ground drag can be minimized with high towers.
- The
rate at which wind speed increases with height, is a function
of surface vegetation, ground roughness, and buildings around
the site where you want to install your machine.
- The
top of the tips, of these obstacles, is the effective ground
line for the wind system.
- The
higher one goes above this effective ground line, at the site
of installation, the more power one's wind machine will produce.
That
is why, wind generators live on tall towers. Their fuel is up there. The quality of your
wind resource improves radically with height. A tall
tower is a must for good energy production with you Winglette wind generator.
So,
how high is high enough? It has been proved that one Winglette wind generator on a 30m tower produce more that twice as much
energy, as two W03 machines on 12m towers. THE CHEAPEST WAY
TO INCREASE THE POWER OF YOUR WINGLETTE, IS TO INCREASE ITS TOWER HEIGHT.
Our
rule of thumb for tower height choice is: Choice a tower
size, at least 6m higher than twice the height, of the obstacles
within 150m of you wind generator. ( In open grass land, take
the turbulence obstacle height as 6m. )
A
wind generator is a serious investment that you are making that
will effect your life style for, presumable, many years in the
future. Going for a decent high tower is by far the wise thing to do.
High
towers is the better choice. It's that simple.
